The State Hermitage Museum

The Hermitage collections comprise over three million items and include the largest collection of paintings in the world, so it’s hardly surprising that only a small percentage are on permanent display. They occupy a large complex consisting of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment, including the Winter Palace, a former residence of Russia’s emperors. Other buildings include the Menshikov Palace, the Museum of Porcelain and the eastern wing of the General Staff Building.

Five of these buildings are open to the public, and although entrance tickets are more expensive for foreign tourists than Russian citizens, entry is free on the first Thursday of every month for everyone, with free daily access for students and children.

Please note: the museum is closed on Mondays. You’ll find the entrance for individual visitors in the Winter Palace itself, accessible from the Courtyard.

A truly world-class experience that every culture-vulture should see at least once in their life…
