This unforgettable 13-day journey starts in Moscow before setting off for Beijing on the Trans-Mongolian route. Your journey takes you around the south-west shore of Lake Baikal before stopping at UlaanBaatar so that you can explore Mongolia’s capital. Then we’re off again through the vast open tracts of Mongolia as our train races onwards towards China’s amazing capital, Beijing.
You’ll probably require a Russian, Mongolian and Chinese visas for this tour. But don’t worry – we can make all the arrangements for you. See our website for more details, or speak to one of our travel experts for assistance.
Day 1- Arrive in Moscow
Your tour starts in Moscow where our driver is waiting at the airport or train station to take you to your accommodation.
Day 2 - Moscow
Today is when your adventure really begins.
A half-day city tour in Moscow.
We start with an introductory meeting, hosted by our guide, before setting off on a half-day tour of the capital’s iconic attractions – Red Square, the Kremlin and St Basil’s Cathedral – and including the Alexander Gardens, Lenin’s Mausoleum and Old Arbat (popular pedestrian thoroughfare).
Day 3 - Departure Moscow
Make the most of your last day in Moscow before transferring to the train station. Take your last few photos or stock up on provisions for the journey before setting off for Beijing.
Day 4 - European Russia
Today, you’ll head past the cities of the Golden Ring, the industrial city of Kirov and the former military city of Perm. Then we cross the Ural Mountains and head onwards into Asia.
Day 5 - Into Eurasia
Passing through Yekaterinburg, the train leaves the eastern foothills of the Ural Mountains behind and heads towards Novosibirsk — the largest city in Siberia.
Day 6 - Into Siberia
We race on through the seemingly endless forests of Siberia, past the mighty Altai region before crossing the River Yenisei at Krasnoyarsk, plunging ever deeper into exotic Asia.
Day 7- Lake Baikal and the Mongolian Border
Having passed through Irkutsk and the amazing Lake Baikal, you continue on to the mountains that border Mongolia. Leaving the last major Russian city of UlanāUde behind, your train heads ever onwards to the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar.
Day 8 - Arrive in Ulaanbaatar and the Gorkhi Terelj National Park
On arrival, you’ll be taken to your accommodation to freshen up and enjoy a hearty breakfast.
You’ll visit the world famous Gorkhi Terelj National Park, followed by lunch at a Ger camp and a relaxing stroll in the hills. There’s an excursion to Turtle Rock and a meditation centre, before returning to the Ger camp for a much-needed evening meal and overnight stay.
Day 9 - Mongolian Steppe
After breakfast, you’re free to discover the local area and relax.
Visit a local herdsman’s family to experience for yourself the fascinating daily life of the local nomadic people.
Day 10 - Ulaanbaatar
Your half-day tour takes in the city’s main monuments, with time to browse the local art, antique and cashmere shops before visiting Zaisan Hill to enjoy the marvellous views it offers of the city.
Day 11 - Ulaanbaatar: Free day
You’re free all day to explore the fascinating city of Ulaanbaatar on your own, or just relax and soak up the local atmosphere.
Day 12 - Leave Ulaanbaatar and Cross the Gobi Desert

Ulaanbaatar - Ger Camp
A Ger (also known as a yurt) is a portable felt-lined tent used by families in Mongolia. It has no separate rooms, only one big room with two or three beds, a table, stools and a stove for heating when it is cool.
Within a Ger the furniture is always arranged in the same way with the kitchen to the right of the door, an altar in the back, and beds to the left and right of the altar.
Staying in a Ger Camp gives the ideal opportunity to sample the daily life of a Mongolian nomad.
